Many famous and recognised names called Novi Sad home. Being loved and cherished by many, Novi Sad was talked about and promoted by its famous citizens all over the world. This left an indelible mark of Novi Sad throughout the world. Below are some of the aforementioned people:
Svetozar Miletić
(1826-1901) – a famous politician and the youngest mayor Novi Sad ever had. He was also one of the founders of the Serbian National Theatre.
Jovan Jovanović Zmaj
(1833-1904) – One of the greatest poets of the Serbian Romanticism. He was also a medical doctor and the first Serbian children’s author. A museum dedicated to his life and work was established in his former house that can be found in Sremska Kamenica.
Vasa Stajić
(1878-1947) – Serbian philosopher and writer. He was a lifelong president of the Matica Srpska and a strong advocate of unifying all Serbians.
Marija Trandafil
(1816-1883) – Most well known benefactor of this region. Today, in her endowment building is the seat of the Serbian Cultural Society.
Đura Daničić
(1825-11882) – Famous philologist and linguist. He was one of the founders of the modern Serbian language.
Mileva Marić Ajnštajn
(1875-1948) – Mathematician, physicist, associate and wife of Albert Einstein.
Laza Kostić
(1841-1910) – Famous Serbian poet and politician. Another famous author from the Serbian Romanticism era.
Isidor Bajić
(1878-1915) – Composer, conductor and founder of the first music school in Novi Sad. Today, this school carries his name.
Miša Dimitrijević
(1846-1889) – Politician and journalist. He was the president of the literary sector of the Matica Srpska.
Slobodan Jovanović
(1869-1958) – Scientist and dean of the University. He was a member of the Serbian Academy of Science.
Jovan Hadžić
(1799-1869) – Author, founder and first president of Matica Srpska.
Jovan Grčić Milenko
(1846-1875) – Poet and translator. Many of his poems were composed which gave him the nickname “The Fruska Gora Nightingale”.
Jovan Đorđević
(1826-1900) – Founder of theatres in Serbia, secretary of Matica Srpska and the lyricist of the Serbian national anthem.
Jakov Ignjatović
(1824-1889) – Writer, politician and a pioneer in writing Serbian realistic novels.
Platon (Pavle) Atanacković
(1788-1867) – Bishop of the Backa territory. He was a writer, philanthropist, and president of Matica Srpska.
Kosta Trifković
(1843-1875) – Author and writer of theatrical comedies.
